How to watch Fast & Furious: the short version

The Fast & Furious saga is ten main films, one spin-off (Hobbs & Shaw), two short films that were shipped as DVD and Blu-ray extras, and a six-season Netflix cartoon. The films fall into three fairly distinct eras: the street-racing years (2001โ€“2006), the heist years (2009โ€“2013) and the globe-trotting spy years (2015 onward). Only the first three films can be watched in any order; from Fast & Furious (2009) onward the story is continuous.

The reason a watch order matters at all is The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. It was the third film released, in 2006, but when the original cast returned for Fast & Furious (2009) the writers decided those events happened before Tokyo Drift, and Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6 followed suit, because Han โ€“ who dies at the end of Tokyo Drift โ€“ was now part of Dom's crew. Fast & Furious 6 ends by replaying Han's crash and revealing who caused it, and Furious 7 picks up immediately afterwards. So in story order Tokyo Drift sits seventh, between Fast & Furious 6 and Furious 7.

Which order should you pick? If you have never seen the films, watch in release order: Tokyo Drift's ending lands as a surprise twist when Fast & Furious 6 catches up with it, which is how the filmmakers intended it. If you have seen them before, or you want the story to make sense as one continuous timeline, use the chronological order. Either way, Hobbs & Shaw is optional; it stands alone and the main films never reference it.

Time commitment: the eleven films run 22 hours 59 minutes in total, or around 23 and a half hours with the two shorts. The shorts are worth those 26 minutes. The Turbo Charged Prelude (6 min) explains how Brian ends up in Miami at the start of 2 Fast 2 Furious, and Los Bandoleros (20 min) shows Dom in the Dominican Republic and how Letty joins the fuel-tanker job that opens Fast & Furious (2009). Spy Racers, the Netflix animated series about Dom's cousin Tony, is 52 episodes of roughly 23 minutes (about 20 hours) and is entirely skippable unless you are watching with children.

Orders explained

Release order

The order the films came out. Best for a first viewing: the ending of Tokyo Drift pays off as a twist when Fast & Furious 6 catches up with it.

Chronological order

Story order. Tokyo Drift moves to after Fast & Furious 6, the two shorts slot in before the films they set up, and Hobbs & Shaw sits between The Fate of the Furious and F9. Spy Racers is appended at the end because the show is only loosely tied to the films.

Films only, chronological

The eleven films in story order with no shorts or cartoon. The quickest way to see the whole saga as one timeline.

Optional extras

Short films

Two shorts originally released as DVD/Blu-ray extras. Include them if you want every gap filled: one explains Brian's move to Miami, the other how Dom's crew came together before Fast & Furious (2009).

Spy Racers (animated)

The six-season Netflix cartoon. Not needed to follow any film; include it only if you want to tick off everything the franchise has made.

Frequently asked

What is the correct order to watch the Fast and Furious movies?

Release order is: The Fast and the Furious (2001), 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), Tokyo Drift (2006), Fast & Furious (2009), Fast Five (2011), Fast & Furious 6 (2013), Furious 7 (2015), The Fate of the Furious (2017), Hobbs & Shaw (2019), F9 (2021) and Fast X (2023). Story order is the same except that Tokyo Drift moves to between Fast & Furious 6 and Furious 7.

Why is Tokyo Drift out of order?

Tokyo Drift was made as a standalone film in 2006, and Han dies at the end of it. When Han was written into Dom's crew for Fast & Furious (2009), Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6, those three films had to take place before his death. Fast & Furious 6 closes by replaying his crash, so Tokyo Drift sits between films 6 and 7 on the timeline.

Do I need to watch Tokyo Drift at all?

You can follow the main story without it, but you will miss who Han is and why the crew is in Tokyo at the start of Furious 7, and Sean Boswell from Tokyo Drift returns in F9. It is short at 104 minutes and worth keeping in.

Do I need to watch Hobbs & Shaw before F9 or Fast X?

No. Hobbs & Shaw is a standalone spin-off set after The Fate of the Furious, and nothing in F9 or Fast X depends on it. Watch it if you like the Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham pairing; skip it if you only want the main story.

How long does it take to watch all the Fast and Furious movies?

The eleven films (ten main films plus Hobbs & Shaw) run 1,379 minutes, which is 22 hours 59 minutes. Adding the two short films brings it to about 23 hours 25 minutes. Spy Racers adds roughly another 20 hours.

Is Fast X the last movie?

No. Fast X ends on a cliffhanger. Universal has dated a final film, Fast Forever (previously referred to as Fast X: Part Two), for 17 March 2028. The project has been delayed several times and had not started filming as of October 2026.

How did Han come back in F9?

F9 reveals that Han's death in Tokyo Drift was staged: Mr. Nobody arranged it, using Deckard Shaw's attack as cover, so that Han could protect a girl named Elle. Han has been alive since the events of Tokyo Drift and rejoins the crew in F9.

Where do the short films fit, and where can I watch them?

The Turbo Charged Prelude for 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003, 6 min) goes between the first and second films; Los Bandoleros (2009, 20 min) goes immediately before Fast & Furious (2009). Both were released as home-video extras rather than on a streaming service, so look for them on the DVD/Blu-ray editions or official uploads.

Is Fast & Furious: Spy Racers canon?

It is an official Universal/DreamWorks production and Tony Toretto is Dom's cousin, with Dom appearing briefly, but the films never reference it. Treat it as optional: it does not affect the live-action story.
