How to watch Jurassic: the short version

The Jurassic franchise is seven live-action films, one eight-minute short and two animated Netflix series. The films split cleanly into three runs: the original Jurassic Park trilogy (1993โ€“2001), the Jurassic World trilogy (2015โ€“2022) that picked the story up 22 years later, and Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), a fresh start with a new cast that still sits in the same continuity. Every film is set in roughly the year it came out and each one follows the last, so there is no Tokyo Drift-style puzzle here: release order and story order are the same thing.

If you are only going to watch the films, that is the whole answer โ€“ start with Jurassic Park and go in release order. The one wrinkle is Battle at Big Rock, a short that Colin Trevorrow made for FX in 2019. It is set a year after Fallen Kingdom and shows the first ordinary family running into loose dinosaurs in a California campsite, which is the exact situation Dominion opens on. It is canon, it is eight minutes long and it is free on Universal's official channels, so slot it in between Fallen Kingdom and Dominion.

The two cartoons are where an order starts to matter. Camp Cretaceous (five seasons, 2020โ€“2022) follows six teenagers stranded on Isla Nublar: season 1 runs during the Jurassic World incident itself and the rest of the show plays out in the gap before Fallen Kingdom. Chaos Theory (four seasons, 2024โ€“2025) rejoins the same characters six years later, in the months before and during Dominion. Both are made by Universal and DreamWorks with the film writers involved, and they tie into the films more than you would expect from a kids' show โ€“ but the films never depend on them. Watch them if you want the whole timeline or you are watching with children; skip them on a first run.

Time commitment: the seven films run 881 minutes, which is 14 hours 41 minutes, or 14 hours 49 minutes with Battle at Big Rock. Camp Cretaceous adds 49 episodes of around 23 minutes (roughly 19 hours, plus a 32-minute interactive special), and Chaos Theory 39 episodes of around 23 minutes (about 15 hours). Everything together is a little under 50 hours.

Orders explained

Release order

The order everything came out. For the films this is also the story order, so it is the right choice for a first viewing.

Chronological order

Story order. The films stay in release order; Battle at Big Rock goes between Fallen Kingdom and Dominion; Camp Cretaceous slots in after Jurassic World (its first season runs during that film) and before Fallen Kingdom; Chaos Theory sits just before Dominion.

Films only

The seven films and the Battle at Big Rock short, no cartoons. Release order and story order are identical, so this is the quickest complete run.

Optional extras

Camp Cretaceous & Chaos Theory (animated)

The two Netflix cartoons and one interactive special. They fit into the gaps between Jurassic World, Fallen Kingdom and Dominion but no film depends on them. Include them if you want the complete timeline or are watching with kids.

Frequently asked

What order should I watch the Jurassic Park movies in?

Release order: Jurassic Park (1993), The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), Jurassic Park III (2001), Jurassic World (2015), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), Jurassic World Dominion (2022) and Jurassic World Rebirth (2025). Each film is set after the one before it, so release order is also chronological order.

Do I need to watch Jurassic Park before Jurassic World?

Not strictly: Jurassic World was written as a fresh start 22 years after the first film, with a new park and a new cast, and it explains what you need. But it is built on the first film โ€“ same island, Dr. Wu, B. D. Wong returns, and the ruins of the original visitor centre appear โ€“ and Dominion brings back Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler and Ian Malcolm from the 1993 film. Watch Jurassic Park first if you can; The Lost World and Jurassic Park III are the ones you can skip.

How long are all the Jurassic Park movies?

The seven films run 881 minutes, or 14 hours 41 minutes: Jurassic Park 127 min, The Lost World 129, Jurassic Park III 92, Jurassic World 124, Fallen Kingdom 128, Dominion 147 (160 in the extended cut) and Rebirth 134. Add the eight-minute Battle at Big Rock short for 14 hours 49 minutes.

Is Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous canon?

Yes. It is produced by Universal, Amblin and DreamWorks with Colin Trevorrow, the director of Jurassic World and Dominion, as an executive producer, and it was written to fit the films: season 1 happens during the Jurassic World incident and season 2 is set six months before the opening scene of Fallen Kingdom. The films themselves never reference the show, so it is optional viewing rather than required.

Where does Chaos Theory fit in the timeline?

Jurassic World: Chaos Theory picks up six years after Camp Cretaceous and is set shortly before, and then during, Jurassic World Dominion. Watch all four seasons after Fallen Kingdom (and Battle at Big Rock) and before Dominion. It ended with its fourth season in November 2025.

What is Battle at Big Rock and do I need to watch it?

An eight-minute live-action short directed by Colin Trevorrow, first shown on FX in September 2019 and then released free online. It is set a year after Fallen Kingdom and shows a family's campsite being invaded by dinosaurs now loose in North America, which is the world Dominion starts in. It is canon and very short, so it is worth watching between Fallen Kingdom and Dominion, but nothing in Dominion depends on it.

Is Jurassic World Rebirth a sequel or a reboot?

A sequel. Rebirth is set in 2027, five years after Dominion, in the same world: the dinosaurs that spread across the planet are now dying off outside the tropics, and the story visits a former InGen research island. None of the previous casts return, so it works as a standalone film, but it is not a restart of the continuity.

Is there another Jurassic World movie coming?

A sequel to Rebirth has been reported as in development since May 2026, with David Koepp rewriting the script and Gareth Edwards leaving the project in August 2026 over creative differences; in October 2026 J. A. Bayona was reported to be in talks to direct. A June 2028 release has been floated by trade scoop outlets, but as of October 2026 Universal had not officially announced a title or a date, so it is not listed here.

Can I skip The Lost World and Jurassic Park III?

Yes, if you only want the main thread. Both are standalone adventures on the second island, Isla Sorna, and the Jurassic World films barely mention them. Dominion does bring back Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler, but their story in that film only assumes you have seen the 1993 original.
